Raoul Urges Stronger Federal Rules to Fight Illegal Robocalls

CHICAGO — Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul joined a bipartisan coalition of 49 attorneys general in urging the Federal Communications Commission to strengthen proposed rules aimed at stopping illegal robocalls and text message scams. The coalition said scammers are increasingly buying legitimate phone numbers instead of spoofing them, making fraudulent calls appear to come from trusted businesses or government agencies. The attorneys general are asking the FCC to require stronger oversight of companies that sell phone numbers, improve reporting to help law enforcement trace illegal calls, restrict the sale of numbers to bad actors and prohibit practices that allow robocallers to avoid detection.
