Raoul Opposes EPA Plan to Roll Back PFAS Drinking Water Protections

CHICAGO — Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul joined a coalition of 17 attorneys general in opposing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal to roll back federal drinking water regulations for four types of PFAS, also known as forever chemicals. The coalition argues the proposal would eliminate federal requirements for public water systems to test for the chemicals, report their presence and treat contaminated drinking water, putting public health at risk. Raoul said PFAS have been linked to serious health problems and stressed that Illinois recently adopted its own state regulations to protect drinking water from the chemicals regardless of any federal changes. The attorneys general submitted comments urging the EPA to keep the 2024 rule in place, saying the proposed rollback violates the Safe Drinking Water Act.
