Raoul Recovers About $95K in Back Wages for Misclassified Temporary Workers

CHICAGO — Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul on July 2 announced an approximately $95,000 settlement with GigSmart Inc. resolving allegations that the company misclassified workers placed in temporary labor jobs through its online platform. State officials said an investigation found workers were treated as independent contractors, paid straight hourly wages without overtime premiums, and in some cases paid below Illinois minimum wage. Authorities also said some workers did not receive a required four hour minimum payment when jobs were canceled and that the company failed to ensure compliance with state registration rules for temporary labor providers. The settlement allows 479 workers to recover unpaid wages, penalties, and interest and requires future workers placed through the platform to be classified as employees with full wage and labor protections under Illinois law.
