Raoul and Pritzker Oppose Postal Service Voting Rule Proposal

CHICAGO — Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and Governor JB Pritzker on July 2 joined separate coalitions of state leaders opposing a proposed U.S. Postal Service rule tied to a federal elections order that critics say would restrict mail voting and shift control of election procedures away from states. Raoul, working with 24 attorneys general, called on the Postal Service to withdraw the rule, arguing it conflicts with court rulings that reaffirm state authority over elections and protect access to mail ballots. A separate coalition of nine governors also urged rejection of the proposal, warning it could disrupt election planning and reduce voter access ahead of the 2026 election. Officials said election administration authority belongs to states under the Constitution and warned the Postal Service should not act as an election agency or create a federal voter list that could block eligible voters from receiving ballots.
