New Illinois Law Allows Cameras in Assisted Living Rooms

SPRINGFIELD — Gov. JB Pritzker has signed a new law allowing residents of assisted living and shared housing facilities to use electronic monitoring devices in their rooms. The bill extends protections already available to nursing home residents and allows more than 28,600 additional residents to install cameras or audio recording devices at their own expense. The devices must be placed in a visible location, and rooms with monitoring equipment must have a sign posted outside the door. The law requires roommate consent if applicable, and that consent can be withdrawn at any time. Supporters said the measure provides residents and families with another option for safety, oversight and peace of mind.
