Illinois Officials Urge Pet Preparedness During Disaster Month

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security is urging residents to include pets in disaster planning during National Pet Preparedness Month in June. Officials cited data showing many pet owners leave animals behind during evacuations and said advance planning is critical since many shelters do not accept pets. Recommendations include keeping pet photos and medical records, preparing food and water supplies, and having leashes, carriers and other essentials ready. Residents are also advised to plan for evacuation or sheltering in place with pets and to arrange help if they are not home during an emergency.
