SPRINGFIELD — Illinois farmers remain ahead of state and national averages for corn and soybean planting and emergence, according to the latest crop progress report. Corn planting in Illinois reached 75% as of May 17, ahead of last year’s pace of 71% and the five year average of 73%. Corn emergence stood at 46%, matching the state’s five year average and topping the national average of 39%. Soybean planting reached 74%, well ahead of last year’s 65% pace and the state average of 63%. Soybean emergence climbed to 44%, above both the national average of 32% and the five year state average of 35%. Illinois winter wheat also continued to perform well, with 82% of the crop headed and 73% rated good to excellent.
