SPRINGFIELD. — Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is encouraging parents to research electric bikes before buying one for their children, warning that some products marketed as e-bikes are actually much faster and more powerful devices that can pose safety risks. As part of the Ride Safe, Ride Smart, Ride Ready campaign, the Secretary of State’s office released a new public service announcement and an online buying guide to help families understand the differences between low speed e bikes, high speed e bikes and e motos. The guide also explains Illinois e-bike classifications, age requirements, motor power and speed limits, and offers tips for choosing a device that fits a child.
