ROCHELLE — The Flagg Rochelle Park District has completed several improvement projects and is preparing for its annual maintenance closure at the REC Center later this month. Executive Director Jackee Ohlinger told board members Monday that work at the Atwood Park bandshell was finished before the Fourth of July celebration and included new lighting, fresh paint, concrete repairs, new caulk and paving around the flagpole. The district also recently restarted the Spring Lake waterfall after it was shut down for more than a year because of mechanical issues. Ohlinger said the nearly 100 year old waterfall is expected to need professional repairs this fall. The REC Center will close from July 27th through Aug. 9th while staff and contractors complete carpet cleaning, sports equipment checks and pool maintenance before reopening.
“We take the two weeks and attempt to perform all maintenance, deep cleaning and inspections during that time,” Ohlinger said. “It is a mad dash to get everything ready so the facility can reopen for our members.”
The annual closure allows the district to complete major work that cannot be done while the facility is open, including draining and cleaning the pools, servicing the fitness center and completing building-wide maintenance before welcoming members back.
