SPRINGFIELD – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin is saying goodbye in Springfield ahead of his retirement. The Illinois Democrat gave his farewell address yesterday to state lawmakers at the Illinois Capitol. Durbin said he will miss helping people, adding that he is still committed to the DREAM Act.
“ I’m still committed to the DREAM Act, and I hope that you’ll join me in that commitment. It was a bipartisan measure, and it should be a bipartisan measure. These DACA people are serving America in so many ways,” he said Wednesday.
The 81-year-old has continuously introduced the measure, which would provide a legal path to citizenship for people who were brought to the U.S. as children. He also warned lawmakers about a growing political divide.
