DeKalb Police Warn Residents About Phone Scam

DEKALB — The DeKalb Police Department is warning residents about a telephone scam in which callers falsely claim to be “Captain John” with the department and tell victims that a family member has been arrested and needs money to be released from jail. Police said the department does not have a Captain John and will never call to request money or payment over the phone. Residents who receive a call like this should hang up immediately, avoid sharing personal or financial information, and never send money or buy gift cards at the caller’s request. Anyone who has already provided information or made a payment is urged to contact the DeKalb Police Department to file a report.
