The White Sox had tied the game in the bottom of the 9th inning on a throwing error.
Vargas also had a RBI double in the game
The White Sox are now 3 games over the .500 mark at (30-27).
Dillon Dingler had a 2-run home run for the Tigers.
Game 2 in the series is Saturday afternoon at Rate Field in Chicago.
