Think Safety in the Kitchen this Thanksgiving Day

SPRINGFIELD – Thanksgiving Day is the leading day for home cooking fires, with an estimated 1,610 fires reported in 2022 alone, marking a 399% increase over the daily average. According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking causes over half of all home fires and is a major contributor to fire injuries and deaths. Illinois State Fire Marshal James A. Rivera urges families to take extra precautions while preparing meals. “Set timers, establish kid- and pet-free zones, and always stay in the kitchen when cooking,” he said. Key tips include never leaving food unattended, using turkey fryers outdoors only, and ensuring the cooking area is free from flammable items.
