Man Dies After Vehicle Found Submerged In Creek Near DeKalb

DEKALB — A man died and a 1-year-old child was seriously injured after a vehicle was found submerged in a creek Wednesday night in DeKalb. Police said officers were called at about 9:58 p.m. after the pair failed to arrive at their intended destination. The vehicle was found upside down in a creek in the 3100 block of South First Street after it apparently left the roadway. Officers lifted the vehicle to rescue the occupants, and police and DeKalb Fire Department paramedics immediately began lifesaving efforts. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The child was flown to a Chicago area hospital and was reported in stable condition. Four DeKalb police officers were injured during the rescue. Three were treated at the scene for minor injuries, and one was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. All of the officers’ injuries were reported as non-life threatening. The crash remains under investigation.
