Safety, Repairs Planned for Red Covered Bridge

PRINCETON  — Plans to repair the Red Covered Bridge are moving forward after the historic structure was heavily damaged by an oversized truck in late 2023, with the Illinois Department of Transportation finalizing the scope of work and planning added safety features. The project includes replacing the roof, bracing, floor beams and siding, along with new lighting, wiring, fire suppression piping, security cameras, interior fire resistant coating and exterior painting. IDOT is also considering a vehicle height detection system with flashing lights and new high visibility warning signs to prevent future strikes at the ten foot eleven inch clearance bridge. The bridge remains closed but has been reinforced while engineering work continues. About one million dollars has been identified for repairs. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the bridge is the only state owned covered bridge open to traffic and serves as a major local landmark and tourist draw.
