Illinois Fire Officials Urge Residents to Check Smoke Alarms

MOLINE – Illinois fire officials are reminding residents to check their smoke alarms and replace any that are not working or are more than 10 years old. Working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by 60%, according to the National Fire Protection Association. During a statewide blitz in 2025, Illinois fire departments installed 1,320 smoke alarms in 465 homes and provided fire safety education to more than 1,000 residents. The free Be Alarmed! program provides smoke alarms and installation at no cost through participating local fire departments.
