SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Public Health is urging residents to recognize the dangers of lead exposure during Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. Governor JB Pritzker has issued a proclamation to raise awareness that primary sources of lead in Illinois homes are contaminated dust and lead-based paint in structures built before 1978. Lead exposure can cause brain and nervous system damage, slowed growth, learning difficulties, and behavioral problems in children. IDPH is expanding statewide lead-testing programs focused on high-risk areas, with universal testing for infants and toddlers expected by 2026. In 2023, more than 200,000 children were tested, revealing over 3,200 with elevated blood lead levels.
