Halloween Safety: Tips to Keep Your Holiday Fire-Free

SPRINGFIELD – Safety officials around the state stress the importance of fire safety on Halloween, noting that from 2018 to 2022, an average of 835 home structure fires each year were linked to decorations. To prevent hazards, the Illinois State Fire Marshal advises using battery-operated candles in jack-o-lanterns, avoiding long trailing fabrics on costumes, and keeping decorations away from heat sources. Parents should ensure children’s costumes allow for good visibility and provide flashlights. Motorists are also urged to drive cautiously during trick-or-treat hours, helping to ensure a fun and safe Halloween for all.
