Duckworth, Durbin Introduce Bill to Close Firearm Background Check Loophole

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin joined colleagues in introducing legislation to close a loophole that allows firearms to be sold when background checks are not completed within a set time, even if buyers are legally prohibited from owning guns. In 2024, nearly 3,000 firearms were sold to individuals who should not have had access because dealers were not required to wait for completed checks. The Background Check Completion Act would require a completed background check for every buyer at federally licensed firearm dealers and is cosponsored by 23 other Democratic senators. The bill has been endorsed by multiple gun safety organizations, including Everytown for Gun Safety, Giffords, Brady, Sandy Hook Promise, and Newtown Action Alliance.
