SPRINGFIELD — January 1 marks the start of Dry January, a month-long challenge encouraging participants to abstain from alcohol for 31 days. The goal is to reset after the holiday season, adopt healthier habits, and reevaluate one’s relationship with alcohol. Experts say even one month can provide health benefits, including repaired liver function, lower risk of heart disease, improved sleep, and weight loss. Participants are encouraged to remove alcohol from their homes, stock up on non-alcoholic beverages, avoid drinking-heavy events, and enlist support from friends or family. The Illinois Liquor Control Commission promotes the challenge as a personal opportunity to focus on clarity and wellness.
