DeKalb Police Warn Residents of Telephone Scam

DEKALB – The DeKalb Police Department is warning residents about a telephone scam in which callers claim to be a police officer and say a family member has been arrested. The scammers reportedly identify themselves as “Officer John” and demand money to get the family member out of jail. Police said they will never call and request money or payment over the phone. Residents should hang up, avoid providing personal or financial information and never send money or purchase gift cards at the request of a caller. Anyone who has provided personal information or made a payment should contact the DeKalb Police Department at 815-748-8400 to file a report. Police also remind residents that scammers often use fear and urgency to pressure victims into making quick decisions. Suspicious calls should be verified by contacting the agency directly using a trusted phone number. In an emergency, call 911.
