Work Underway on Next Phase of I-39 Reconstruction in Cherry Valley

CHERRY VALLEY — The Illinois Department of Transportation says work is underway on the next phase of the I-39 reconstruction in Cherry Valley, a $125.9 million project rebuilding the interstate between Mulford Road and Harrison Avenue. Crews are beginning pre-stage widening along both directions of I-39, with two lanes to remain open in each direction and nightly lane closures as needed through Nov. 21. Full reconstruction begins in spring 2026 and will expand I-39 from four to six lanes, rebuild bridges over Harrison Avenue and two rail lines, and continue in multiple stages until completion in October 2028. The work is part of a larger $302.4 million effort funded by the state’s Rebuild Illinois program to modernize the I-39 and U.S. 20 corridor, including a new diverging diamond interchange and bridge replacements over the Kishwaukee River.
