SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal is reminding residents to stay alert to the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning during National Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month. In 2024, Illinois fire departments responded to 9,860 CO-related calls, and an average of 20 people in the state die each year from accidental exposure. Officials say the risk increases in colder months when furnaces and heaters are used. Residents are urged to install working carbon monoxide alarms near sleeping areas, inspect fuel-burning appliances annually, and never run vehicles or generators in enclosed spaces.
