ROCHELLE — The Rochelle City Council approved a $50,000 budget amendment and seek consulting services to evaluate the city’s Advanced Communications System. The system began in 1996 and has received more than $9.4 million in city investment. It serves about 200 internet customers, but the 2026 budget projects a loss of about $400,000 tied to capital expenses. City management also found the system had not completed required Federal Communications Commission and state filings, making it ineligible for federal grants that could have supported rural broadband expansion. The city is considering options that include selling the system, expanding service using its existing fiber network or pursuing grant funding and retained earnings. The consultant would develop a strategic plan for the future of the internet service provider.
