POLO — The City of Polo is applying for an Open Space Land Acquisition and Development grant to replace playground equipment at Millard Deuth Park. The proposed project is estimated at $532,016 and would include new equipment and installation near the park’s baseball diamonds. Polo Mayor Mark Scholl said the city is optimistic after learning from last year’s unsuccessful application.
“We applied last year and unfortunately our scoring didn’t match up with what they were looking for, but we’re pretty optimistic this year,” Scholl said. “We’re seeing a lot of wear and tear on our existing equipment and it gets quite a bit of use, you know, through a lot of our normal day-to-day activities, but when we have soccer, baseball, and softball events, you know, it draws a lot of people to the park.”
The city must provide matching funds if the grant is awarded and expects to learn by the end of the year whether it was successful. The city also is looking at adding parking on the east side of the park because of congestion during baseball, softball and soccer events.
