ROCHELLE – Rochelle City officials are exploring a potential data center that could use up to 50 megawatts of available electric capacity, leaving additional power for future growth. The facility would be located in an industrial-zoned area and would not be a large-scale national-style site. Under the proposal, the potential developer would cover all infrastructure and utility costs, provide onsite generation for reliability, and participate in load management programs. Electricity would be purchased on the open market with an 11 percent distribution surcharge, while existing rate stabilization programs would continue for current customers. Water use would be minimal through a closed-loop cooling system, and noise concerns would be managed under community standards. If built, city officials claim the project could strengthen Rochelle Municipal Utilities’ electric system, generate local revenues, provide property tax benefits for other districts, and have minimal impact on city services.
