P. Scott Neville Jr. Becomes Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice

CHICAGO — Justice P. Scott Neville Jr. assumed office as Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court on Sunday, beginning a three-year term. He is the second Black Chief Justice in state history. Neville, sworn in Friday in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood, has said he will work to ensure accessible, fair justice for all. He began his legal career as the first Black law clerk for a Cook County Appellate Justice, later serving as a Circuit Court judge, Appellate Court Justice, and joining the Supreme Court in 2018. As Chief Justice, he will oversee court administration, judge appointments, and the court budget. He lives in Chicago with his wife, Sharon, and two adult stepdaughters.
