OSF Saint Katharine Medical Center Listed as At-Risk Amid Federal Health Care Cuts

DIXON – OSF Saint Katharine Medical Center in Dixon has been identified as one of nine Illinois hospitals at risk of financial distress in a national study by the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at the University of North Carolina. The hospital, formerly known as Katherine Shaw Bethea, was highlighted for its high share of Medicaid patients, with one-quarter of its 2020 patient base depending on the program. The report raises concerns that proposed federal budget cuts, totaling nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, could threaten rural hospitals’ financial stability, including Saint Katharine’s. While some lawmakers argue the cuts are necessary to reduce taxes, critics warn they may force service reductions or closures in vulnerable rural communities.
