One Person Injured in DeKalb Apartment Fire

DEKALB – One person was injured in an apartment fire Sunday night at 432 Russell Road in DeKalb. The DeKalb Fire Department was called at 10:07 p.m. and found a fire in the bathroom of Apartment 6. Firefighters extinguished the fire with help from the building’s sprinkler system. The fire was contained to the bathroom, but the apartment sustained about $15,000 in smoke and water damage. One occupant suffered smoke inhalation and burns and was taken to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital for treatment. Fire investigators determined the fire was accidental and caused by the careless disposal of smoking materials. Three apartments were affected by the fire and their occupants have been displaced with assistance from the American Red Cross. No firefighters were injured.
