SPRINGFIELD — Two new gun safety laws passed earlier this year will take effect in Illinois on January 1, 2026. The Safe Gun Storage Act updates state law to require more secure firearm storage in homes where guns may be accessible to minors, at-risk individuals, or those prohibited from firearm possession. It also reduces the timeframe for reporting lost or stolen firearms from 72 to 48 hours and adds civil penalties for violations. A second law requires all law enforcement agencies in Illinois to participate in the federal eTrace platform, which tracks firearms used in crimes and helps identify trafficking patterns. State officials say the changes are designed to improve public safety, prevent unauthorized access to firearms, and support more effective criminal investigations.
