Illinois Tollway Ready For Heavy Holiday Travel

DOWNERS GROVE — The Illinois Tollway is preparing for increased traffic during the Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year holidays and is urging drivers who need roadside assistance to dial star 999 and remain inside their vehicles until help arrives. The heaviest travel day is expected to be Tuesday, December 23, with about 1.8 million vehicles forecast to use the Tollway. Traffic is expected to be lighter on Christmas Day with about 1.1 million vehicles and on New Year Day with fewer than 1 million vehicles compared with a daily average of 1.6 million. Tollway officials say Highway Emergency Lane Patrol crews will be increased during the holiday period to assist stranded drivers with flat tires, dead batteries, fuel and towing. Drivers are also reminded to slow down and move over for stopped vehicles with flashing lights, avoid using handheld devices while driving, and be aware that most temporary construction lane closures will be suspended from noon December 24 through 9 a.m. December 29 and again from noon December 31 through 9 a.m. January 5, though some work zones will remain in place.
