Illinois Rises to Top Tier in Emergency Preparedness Ranking

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Public Health announced Illinois has been named a high performance state for emergency preparedness in a new Trust for America’s Health report. The state moved up from the middle tier in 2025 to the top tier in 2026, which includes 20 states. The report measures readiness for public health emergencies using indicators such as response systems, patient safety, and disease surveillance. Governor JB Pritzker said Illinois has strengthened public health systems and relied on science based decisions. IDPH Director Dr Sameer Vohra said the ranking reflects investments in training, infrastructure, and emergency planning. The state cited upgrades to hospitals for dangerous pathogens, improved data systems, expanded vaccine access, and participation in global outbreak response efforts as key factors in the improvement.
