Illinois Fire Departments Begin Transition to New National Emergency Reporting System

SPRINGFIELD — Fire departments across Illinois are beginning the transition to the National Emergency Response Information System, a cloud-based platform designed to replace the 40-year-old National Fire Incident Reporting System. NERIS provides departments with real-time data tools, location-based analytics, and operational dashboards to improve emergency response and planning at no cost. The statewide rollout is part of a national effort led by the U.S. Fire Administration, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Fire Safety Research Institute. Departments are being contacted to start onboarding, and NFIRS will be decommissioned on January 1, 2026.
