SPRINGFIELD — Beginning July 1, all Illinois children will receive routine blood lead testing at 12 and 24 months of age under an expanded statewide requirement announced by the Illinois Department of Public Health. The change replaces the previous system that required testing only in designated high risk ZIP codes. Children age 6 and younger will also continue to be screened for possible lead exposure during health care visits. State health officials said there is no safe level of lead in the blood, and children with confirmed elevated levels will receive public health follow up, including home inspections and education to reduce future exposure.
