SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is urging hunters to prioritize safety when using tree stands, which are the leading cause of hunting-related accidents and fatalities in the state. Recent falls have resulted in serious injuries, such as broken bones and spinal damage, underscoring the importance of using a safety harness and inspecting equipment before each use. IDNR officials stress that falls can be prevented by following safety protocols, including using a fall arrest system, avoiding alcohol or drugs, and informing others of hunting plans. For more safety tips, hunters are encouraged to visit the IDNR’s website.
