SPRINGFIELD — Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Alexi Giannoulias has awarded $28.9 million in grants to support libraries and literacy programs across Illinois, including funding for two programs serving the region. About $22.2 million will support library services, including operations, technology, resource sharing, delivery services and radio information programs for people who cannot read standard print materials. Northern Illinois Radio Information Service at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb will receive $36,755 through the Library Service Grant program. Another $6.8 million will fund 104 literacy programs that provide reading, writing, math and English language instruction to adults and families. Sauk Valley Community College in Dixon will receive $71,842 for its Adult Literacy program. The grants are supported by state and federal funding. Giannoulias said his office has awarded more than $214 million in library and literacy grants since he took office.
