Former Deputy Sentenced to 20 Years for Killing in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD – A former Sangamon County deputy has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for fatally shooting Sonya Massey at her home in July 2024. Sean Grayson was convicted of second-degree murder in October 2025. The shooting occurred after Massey called 911 about a potential intruder. The judge imposed the maximum sentence allowed under state law.
