Durbin Law Requires Food Allergy Training for School Staff

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin helped pass a law requiring school food service staff to receive training on preventing and responding to food allergies. The Protecting Children with Food Allergies Act, added as an amendment to the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, mandates that schools provide essential allergy training to staff working under federal meal programs. The law addresses the growing number of children with food allergies, estimated at six million nationwide, and ensures school personnel are prepared to recognize and respond to allergic reactions, including cases that require epinephrine.
