Durbin Backs Bipartisan Bill To Create Produce Prescription Program For Veterans

WASHINGTON. U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois has joined U.S. Reps. Chellie Pingree of Maine and Vern Buchanan of Florida introduced bipartisan legislation that would allow the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to provide prescriptions to veterans with diet related chronic conditions. The Produce Prescription for Veterans Act would give the VA authority to offer vouchers or debit cards for free or discounted fruits and vegetables, building on pilot programs launched in 2023. Supporters say the measure would improve veteran health outcomes and address food insecurity, which affects nearly one quarter of post 9 11 veterans, while helping manage conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.
