BYRON – The City of Byron was awarded a Health Safety Improvements Program grant through the Illinois Department of Transportation to help fund a future roundabout at Mill and Tower Roads. The estimated $3 million project would include engineering, construction, and design costs, with the grant covering 80% and the city responsible for the remaining 20%.

At the Byron City Council meeting Wednesday night it was announced they were awarded $2 million. According to the rules tied to the grant, the project must be out to bid by January of 2029. Byron City Engineer Jason Stoll said they will start work on designing and necessary environmental studies. He noted previously that the roundabout would make that high-traffic intersection safer.
“We think it’s a good solution for a problematic intersection,” he said. “We think that’ll create a safer situation for motorists and pedestrians at that intersection.”
