MONTEGO BAY — Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness says his country has prepared for what is one of the most powerful hurricane landfalls on record in the Atlantic Basin.
“ There will be significant damage, even catastrophic damage, but our preparations and our plans for the immediate recovery have been well put together,” Holness said Tuesday.
Category 5 Hurricane Melissa slammed the island nation with winds over 250 mph, causing flooding and widespread damage. The Sandals Foundation has launched a relief effort to assist communities across Jamaica, particularly in the island’s western region. The foundation, working with government officials and relief partners, is coordinating emergency aid and long-term recovery support.
“People are resilient, but we’re going to need support from the global community to help us recover,” said Oliver Mair, Jamaica’s Honorary Consul in Miami.
