SPRINGFIELD – Gov. JB Pritzker has proclaimed October as Cybersecurity Awareness Month in Illinois and is urging residents to take steps to protect their personal information online. The Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology recommends using two factor authentication, creating unique and strong passwords, keeping browsers and devices updated and monitoring bank and credit accounts for suspicious activity. Residents are also urged to be cautious with online offers and unexpected emails, phone calls and websites that request personal information. State officials say phishing scams are designed to steal personal information or install harmful software. Residents should delete suspicious emails, avoid questionable websites and never provide personal information to unknown people online or by phone.
