DIXON – The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam targeting families of people in custody. Scammers are calling family members and claiming money is needed to post bond, then asking them to purchase gift cards and provide the card numbers over the phone. The sheriff’s office said it will never request gift cards or prepaid cards for bond payments. Residents should not provide gift card numbers, PINs or financial information to unsolicited callers. Anyone receiving a call should hang up and independently verify the information with the sheriff’s office before sending money.
