DEKALB — The DeKalb City Council approved a $43,042 drone package for the Police Department to improve public safety and officer safety. The five year agreement approved last week includes two Skydio R10 drones designed for indoor searches and confined spaces, with improved obstacle avoidance and low light capabilities. The department has used drones since 2024 for crash and crime scene mapping, public events, search and rescue and search warrant operations. A $29,275 federal grant will cover most of the cost, with the city paying the remaining balance through four annual installments of $3,441.75.
