SPRINGFIELD – Comptroller Susana Mendoza is encouraging Illinois residents to protect their personal information during Identity Theft Awareness Week. Mendoza said identity theft can affect anyone, including children, and advised monitoring bank accounts, using strong passwords, limiting personal information on social media, and checking credit reports annually. Parents are encouraged to consider credit freezes for minors to prevent fraud. The Federal Trade Commission reported more than 1.1 million identity theft complaints nationwide in 2024, including over 43,000 from Illinois. Residents who suspect fraud can contact the FTC, their bank, or the Illinois Attorney General’s Identity Theft Hotline at 1-866-999-5630.
