ROCHELLE – Rochelle Township High School district officials are proposing the installation of a 6-acre solar array on the western portion of the campus. The district researched the project by working with vendors to analyze energy usage and trends. Plans for the project involve a partnership with Rochelle Municipal Utilities to establish a net crediting system for the school. The proposed site at 1401 East Flagg Road would contain an array covering approximately 4.92 acres. Financial projections suggest the district could save over 7 million dollars over 30 years. While the initial cost is 3.79 million dollars, federal tax credits and energy incentives are expected to cover most of the investment. Officials estimate the system will pay for itself in about 10.5 years. The solar panels would generate enough power to offset over 83 percent of the annual electricity bill for the school.
