WASHINGTON DC – U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin urged Senate appropriations leaders to protect $75 million in federal funding for passenger rail projects in Illinois, including the Chicago Access Program, upgrades on the corridor between Chicago, Indianapolis, and Cincinnati, and expanded service on the Hiawatha Corridor. Durbin said the funding, part of the Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail grant program, is needed to improve capacity, reduce travel times, and expand Amtrak service in the state. The request comes as House Republicans have proposed eliminating the account, which could threaten ongoing work on Illinois rail lines and other national intercity passenger rail projects.
