CHICAGO — Illinois leaders, protesters and members of the Venezuelan community are reacting to President Trump’s U.S. military action in Venezuela. Governor J.B. Pritzker posted on X that the action is unconstitutional and puts U.S. troops in harm’s way without a long term strategy. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said the Trump administration violated international law and is dangerously escalating the risk of full scale war. Johnson said the move is solely about oil and power. In Rockford demonstrators gathered Saturday for a rally calling for no war on Venezuela. The group said the attack and the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro violate the U.S. Constitution. In Chicago the Illinois Venezuelan Alliance hosted a gathering at a North Side restaurant to discuss the action and Maduro’s capture. Some attendees supported the move but raised concerns about how Maduro was removed. Another group marched in protest in the Loop Saturday night and called the action unconstitutional.
