New Illinois Law Targets Squatting, Takes Effect January 1

SPRINGFIELD — A new law signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker will make it easier for property owners to remove squatters from their homes starting January 1. The Squatter Bill, signed over the summer, gives law enforcement clearer authority to act when someone is unlawfully occupying a property. The law also draws a legal distinction between squatters and tenants, helping homeowners more quickly regain control of their property.
