SPRINGFIELD — A new state law taking effect January 1 will require the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board to launch a certification program for law enforcement therapy dog teams. Under Senate Bill 1491, signed by Gov. JB Pritzker in August, the board will train officers to work with therapy dogs during crisis and emergency response situations. The program is designed to improve support for individuals in distress and expand officer wellness resources, with certified teams expected to be available statewide.
